Speaking as a professional: if the chemical plant itself was hacked through a coffee machine, then several other people have already thoroughly fucked the Swiss cheese and the entire IT infrastructure needs to be audited. Devices in a public area should NEVER have been allowed to talk to production machines in the first place.

Take a look at Fiio’s wireless DACs. I use a BTR11 (costs like 25 EUR) and the quality is as good as I can reasonably expect at that price. Its output is a 3.5mm jack and it easily drives my 80-ohm Beyer.

If it uses a combustion engine, you could try putting something hydrocarbon-soluble in the fuel, like polystyrene. Some of it will get past the fuel filter and foul up the carburetor (and probably the spark plug) without causing permanent damage to the engine. Removing the blockage is trivial, all you need to do is soak and rinse the parts in fresh gasoline, but the diagnosis and disassembly requires some effort and technical knowledge.

It’s less the length of time and more the number of times it should have been deleted, considering it has no value to me.

In my personal opinion, for most home servers, the double redundancy of RAID 6 is more valuable than having a fully rebuilt array as soon as possible. If one member of a RAID 6 array fails, you’re still at an effective redundancy of a RAID 5. If one member of a RAID 5 array fails, you have zero redundancy until the hot spare is rebuilt.

If energy consumption is also a factor, it’s worth keeping in mind that a hot spare can be powered down by the controller until it is needed.

I’d personally go with RAID 6: 4 data + 2 distributed parity. That was the plan for my server too, but the motherboard only has four SATA ports and one had to be dedicated to the OS SSD.

My predecessor at work had a “backup scheme” where each week a full copy of important VMs’ virtual disks would be pulled by a backup VM. Two issues with that. One, the VMs were not powered off and nothing ensured that the disks were synced. Two, the backups were made onto the same physical host with no replication or high availability beyond RAID 1.

Benefit of my job: I get access to the scrap pile. I don’t know any reputable used/refurbished sellers.

I know what it is, and I ensure compliance at work (I’m a sysadmin). At home, it’s less about best practices and more about what hardware I can afford. Manufacturers tend not to offer regional discounts. A 2-2-0 scheme is better than nothing at all.

No backups. For important documents and photos, that was the backup and most of them have copies on my PC. The rest is easily replaced. I knew what I was getting into, and that the free, decommissioned hard drives with 20-30 thousand hours on them were a lit fuse.

The exif data says that it’s 4000x3000 pixels, but with an upper-right orientation. Looks like the camera always records the image data in landscape orientation and simply changes which corner represents the (0, 0) pixel.

It also means that Catbox doesn’t re-encode the image and preserves its metadata (for better or worse), which is good to know.

Why did this image load from right to left? It’s bothering me more than it should.

Do early ipods not show up as mass storage devices at all?

But my main points boil down to:

• Extra hardware -> extra work & materials -> extra cost
• Additional point of failure
• Horrible effect on repairability, e-waste
• Limits audio quality and volume (both maximum and minimum) to the integrated DAC’s output
• Limits compatibility to devices that have USB-C and implement the protocols, which precludes everything that is analog

That is a horrid idea from so many perspectives and I hope it never sees the light of the heavens. I would elaborate, but my reply would surely contain an excess of profanities and I fear the moderators’ wrath.

That pisses me off to no end. Not just the fact that Apple took a steaming dump and every other company decided to eat it, that’s just natural. But it would be So. Fucking. Easy. to capture an entire niche by just slapping a minimal DAC circuit and a TRRS socket on a phone. And nobody does it! Fairphone doesn’t. Pinephone doesn’t. “Nothing”, which is supposed to be this quirky unique thing, doesn’t, but what it does do is shove an AI in the camera where all it does is crank up the fucking saturation!
