It had served me well for the last 2 years. I accidentally hit a rock on the backswing and it broke into 3 pieces. It was probably weakened by exposure to the elements, aggressive sharpening, and being low quality to begin with. The new one is much much better
The all important decision tree:
Buy cheap tool -> if it breaks -> buy good tool
Two exceptions only, if there is a significant safety threat on breakage, or if the market is saturated with ‘segmentation’ to the point there’s 10 or more choices, start with the second cheapest one.
🤔 is this… dull? 🦋
aggressive sharpening
Sure doesn’t hope so
“it’s still sharp”

Oh jeez, I should’ve considered that before posting, I can hear mod sirens in the distance 😰
Machetes are banned here now due to kids using them to Pokemon battle in malls. Glad you’re still getting to enjoy hacking foliage.
wat
Over here same thing they were banned because kids would make roadblocks and attack commuters
As a commuter, we probably had it coming.
Where I grew up in Central America, machetes were pretty commonly worn/used out in the countryside. AFAIK they were always shaped like your new one. FWIW Home Depot calls your old one a “Shearing Knife” and a “Christmas Tree Knife”. idk why.
I think they’re used to shape trees into the traditional Christmas tree cone, hence the name.
Oh, that makes sense… I wonder if that’s why yours broke? Maybe it was designed for thin branches and pines, and you were using it for something else?
I was very disappointed when I bought a machete and discovered that I could not just slice through hanging vines like a jungle explorer from the movies. (Hitting a loose, thick vine with a machete just pushes it rather than cutting it.)
That’s why they always hack 4-5x in the movies to cut their way through the vines. Or pull on them with the left hand to add tension, then cut with the right.
are you sure it wasn’t stepped on by some evil demi-god
I have this beast. It’s like a sword shaped axe!
something tells me that the new one will break MUCH sooner than the older one
