It’s that time of year to clear out all the beds and get them ready to overwinter garlic and onions.
My pumpkins that i spent days prepping a plot for, tilled, fertilized, automatic irrigation system, didn’t do well at all. The potatoes that i yanked from the pantry, let my son cut into pieces and basically tossed too close together in soil that i barely loosened up still full of grass, did amazing.
A 6x18 bed behind a barn that i forgot to water half the time filled this box about 3 times, which weighed around 30lbs each + we’ve just been pulling them to throw in with dinner for the past few nights.
A couple pest, a couple bad ones, but overall I’m super happy.
I gave a box to each of the neighbors on either side and kept one for myself
That’s awesome! I got 26 kg of peaches from my tree this summer. Had to start harvest earlier because the tree was risking snapping a few branches. The neighbors loved it.

My personal experience with squash is that it either grows on its own or it doesn’t grow. No amount of work will change the already determined outcome.

Nice work! After the squash vine borers and squash bugs this year, I will never plant non-resistant squash again. I hear the “Long Island Cheese” pumpkin is tasty and resistant, so I will try that next year (along with butternut which did fine this year despite the bugs).
Our biggest issue was the wildlife. We just moved here last year so were still figuring everything out. Turns out we have a huge groundhog population in the woods who were climbing the 2ft chicken wire fence with ease and eating all the leaves they could. I replaced it with 3ft wire and they were still getting over so I took the staples out of the top 1ft of the post so the chicken wire would flop over when they tried to climb and it worked like a charm, but it was already a little too late

I lived in 8b, there’s still plenty of good things you can grow, like figs, currants, and kiwi fruit! I even grew some dwarf citrus that lived in pots indoors over the winter.
My current projects are a 4’ yuzu tree and a 6’ harvester peach tree both in a pot. I got them this past April.
I didn’t know Amazon shipped spuds. Neat.
